What Happened to "Captain Crunch"?

My wife and I don't let our kids eat sugar cubes dipped in honey, and for the same reason, we never buy the "breakfast food" called "Cap'n Crunch." But we both remember "Cap'n Crunch" from when we were kids.

I used to try to get a laugh by saying it the way it was spelled: "Cappin." My sister didn't get the joke, and ribbed me for taking everything literally. Oh well. They can't all be funny.

But other people remember it differently. They remember the name spelled out, as "Captain Crunch." When these people walk through the grocery stores, they see boxes of "Cap'n Crunch" and they think, "That's not right! When did they change it?"

Then they look around the Internet to see if they can find out when the spelling was changed. And they can't find any indication that it was ever changed.

Name anything at all, and there's a good chance you can find somebody who collects it. Collectors love to show off their collections. And digital photography and the Internet let them do this for almost nothing. So if you look around a bit, you can find photos posted by people who collect old cereal boxes.

But you can't find any photos of cereal boxes that say "Captain Crunch."

To the people who are looking for those photos and can't find them, this is a sign that something very strange is going on. They may wonder if perhaps they're just not remembering it correctly. But that's an uncomfortable thought, easily dismissed.

Perhaps, they think, hidden forces have been at work, changing the images on the Internet, changing the images in private collections, covering their tracks to conceal the fact that history has been altered.

It's another manifestation of the Mandela Effect.
