What Causes The Mandela Effect?

source: rhsrebellion.com
The Mandela Effect was only recently discovered, so the science behind it is still young, and some of the details are not yet well-understood. Among other things, people are still trying to figure out how and when it started, how widespread it is, and -- most importantly -- what causes it.

Some people think it's happening because of experiments in quantum mechanics that have been going on in Switzerland. We'll come back to this shortly.

Others hint darkly that sinister forces are at work, altering not only our current reality but also our history -- moving South America two thousand miles to the east, for example, and then changing all the maps, in all the atlases, in all the libraries, and on the Internet too.

Some people say it's because the End Times are coming. According to these people, the Mandela Effect is a sign of the impending Rapture, and those who are experiencing the Mandela Effect will be taken to Heaven first, because they are the most enlightened!

Personally, I find the End Times argument less than compelling as motivation for further analysis. After all, if the end of the world is nigh, there's not much time, or reason, to sort it all out, is there?

But the people who hold this belief are very interesting.

They remember! They remember when things used to be different! And even though they don't have any evidence to support their memories -- even though they can scour the Internet for hours without finding a single supporting source -- they have faith that their memories are correct, and they have the strength to stand by their faith! Of course these people will be taken to Heaven first! How could it be otherwise?

As for sinister forces, quietly changing the contents of our homes and libraries: call it failure of imagination, but I just can't see it, especially with what we know about the sea floor spreading in the Atlantic.

Sinister forces would have to be very powerful to overcome plate tectonics. If they had so much power, why would they bother changing names of commercial products and lines from old movies? For that matter, what would be the point in changing one relatively minor detail of a famous historical event?

So I tend to dismiss the sinister forces angle as well.

The quantum mechanics angle is a different question. It's not so easy to dismiss.

It's not so easy to explain, either -- especially given the probability (which I assume to be reasonably high) that you're not already a theoretical physicist.
